Barrel Factory Was Largest In the West

one may wonder how bad it was over a hundred Forty Six years ago. A report from the West Virginia Journal in March of 1867, it was noted that new business was booming in the area:

Mr. Everet late of Cumberland, Md. is now engaged in the erection of a barrel factory on Kanawha St. in this city, which will be among the largest in the west. "It will turn out 200 barrels per day, from the logs, ready for use. The machinery is of the most perfect kind, and the seasoning apparatus is of a new patent which will fully season green lumber by means of hot air and steam in about 36 hours. "The proprietor is one of those gentlemen that we are glad to see among us, affable and capable. Also reported in the publication was the announcement of a friend who is well skilled in the manufacture of paper, proposes to erect a Mill in this city. "His long experience in all departments of the business render it certain that he will be successful in this enterprise. This is one of the best points for such a mill in the west." Although the discovery of oil was fairly recent in 1867, the Journal reported, "There are now five, first class oil refineries in and near our city, which make as pure refined oil as is made in our country. "The proceeds are mainly spent in this city. We shall make a full examination of the hereafter.
