BAILEY FIRE 12 FAMILY MEMBERS PERISH IN MORNING FIRE. Fire inspectors continued sifting through ashes and debris of the Charles Bailey residence on Rt. 2, South in efforts to determine the cause of the flash fire which took the lives of 12 members of the family early Sunday morning, June 8,1969. The fire, termed "the worst in Parkersburg's history" as far as loss of lives, erupted around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, apparently starting in the dining room of the six-room, single floor dwelling on Rt. 2,near the Jimbo's Drive-in Restaurant. Charles Bailey, 41, his wife, Ruby 36, and 10 of their 13 children perished in the early morning blaze. see the complete story the link below

THE WRIGHT BROTHERS AIRPLANE PILOTED BY MORRIS PRIEST CRASHED INTO THE PARKERSBURG CITY PARK LILY POND ON AUG 19 1913 PRIEST WAS NOT INJURED, BUT THE AIRPLANE WAS A TOTAL LOSS. PRIEST WAS PLANNING ON GIVING PLANE RIDES LATER IN THE DAY.

QUINCY HILL WATER TANKS BURST ON MARCH 19,1909. - MR. AND MRS. WALTER WIGAL WERE KILLED AND SEVERAL BUILDINGS WERE DAMAGED AND DESTROYED WHEN THE QUINCY HILL WATER TANKS BURST ON MARCH 19,1909. RIVERS OF WATER TORE THROUGH STRUCTURES FROM 13TH STREET TO THE LITTLE KANAWHA RIVER . RESIDENTS REPORTED SEEING LIGHTNING STRIKE THE TWO TANKS BEFORE THEY BURST.

ON NOV.30,1929, THE CAMDEN THEATER AND NEARBY BUILDINGS IN THE 700 BLOCK OF MARKET STREET  WERE DESTROYED BY FIRE. TO PREVENT THE YMCA ON EIGHTH STREET FROM CATCHING ON FIRE, YOUTHS PASSED BUCKETS OF WATER FROM THE YMCA'S SWIMMING POOL TO THE BUILDING'S ROOF.

ON JAN. 5, 1916, THE STEAMER KANAWHA SANK AT LOCK 19 ON THE OHIO RIVER AT WASHINGTON , KILLING 19 PASSENGERS AND CREW MEMBERS. THE KANAWHA, BUFFETED BY HIGH WINDS ON A SWOLLEN RIVER, STRUCK A LOCK WALL AND LIGHT TOWER AT THE DAM.
